After a wonderful two weeks in the Keys we packed up to begin our journey home. We anticipated being able to get a walk-in site at John Pennekamp because before we left I checked on-line and there were two sites still available. We were quite surprised by the greeting we received at John Pennekamp by the two women running the check-in booth. They were both very abrasive, and initially stated there were no sites available. Since we had just checked, Ron told one of the woman we were looking for a walk-in site and we had seen availability on line. All of a sudden they admitted to a site -but we wouldn't fit in the space. That was also not true because we specifically checked for a space to accommodate our RV and that space fit the bill. During the discussion one of the women yelled at Ron and told him we had to book a year in advance for a spot. Like we were stupid or something. Not sure what the whole attitude was about but they were both so intimidating that we just left but not before one of the women threw a paper at Ron and stated it was a list of CG’s in the area. Then she sarcastically said.”Good Luck. ! Not that she meant it.
We have been using the Florida Park system for years and have never had a bad encounter with any of the rangers or volunteers. These women were the exception so we placed a complaint with the Florida Park System on line. Not that it will do any good but it made us feel better.
We did try the Pelican Cay CG on the list they gave us but it was a CG/Marina and a very scary place. The lady, Susan, who ran the place was nice and we opted out stating that we really needed full hook-ups. We ended back at the Florida City CG in Florida City. We have been at the CG twice in the past and never had a problem getting a site. It is a county run CG so there are a lot of permanent residents. It has been four years since we were here last but many of the same campers are still present.
By the time we settled in it was 3:30 pm so we had an early dinner and I started the laundry brigade. After two weeks without laundry facilities there was a lot of laundry to do. But since I packed enough for a year (so Ron says) we never ran out of clothes or towels. LOL Not sure what tomorrow will bring , but definitely not the aqua waters of the keys.
