Day 12 - Savannah, GA, The Pink Pig, Savannah National Wildlife Refuge

It was pretty cold here last night with the temps hovering around 40 degrees. Thank goodness we have heat pumps that run off of electricity. They were on all night, kept us nice and warm and saved on the propane we would normally have used to heat the MH.  Heat pumps are a great idea.

The early morning clouds gave way to bright sunshine and another beautiful day.  We left around 10 am to tour around Savannah. Our first stop was the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist built in 1873. The church is undergoing maintenance so we were unable to get a good picture of the double spires. It is a very beautiful church reminding us of some of the churches we saw in Spain and South America. It has been well maintained and is in great condition for its age.

After leaving the church we walked around Savannah enjoying the ambiance of the  area with its row homes and pretty structures.

It was not very crowded with very light traffic so it was easy to get around.

We stopped in Lafayette Square to get a picture of the fountain.

We stopped by the police station and found an interesting display out front. One was an old 1947 police car – in very good condition, the second a 1953 police car and the third – let’s look at the picture first.

The third picture (s) below says it all. They take drunk driving very seriously around here. Get a ride by a Taxi after drinking = $20.00 by the police  = $1,800.00

We decide to check out the Colonial Park Cemetery.imageThe cemetery was established in 1750. The stones were so old we had a problem reading the inscriptions.

After two hours of walking around we decided to get the car and take a ride  to the waterfront and have lunch. Well that didn’t work out  - no parking spaces and lots of traffic and people. So we decided to head out to the Pink Pig,  a restaurant near the CG. The Pink Pig was certainly pink. But, the food was good and it was a fun place to eat.

We still had a lot of time before nightfall so opted to take a ride to the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. A four mile loop inside the  refuge passes along waterways with lots of wildlife including alligators. We also saw some very foolish humans putting themselves and their children in danger.

image   Not sure who was more dangerous the Gator   or the Mother allowing her child to ride on the roof of the car.

After that little adventure we actually saw an adult woman sitting on the roof of her car hanging out the sun roof. I thought I had gotten a video but nope – hit the wrong button. Once all the crazy people were out of sight we refocused on how pretty the area is. The hanging moss was really pretty and formed a nice canopy overhead.

There were masses of ducks and birds in the sanctuary. Difficult to see in the picture but all the blurry black dots are ducks.

Since we love nature so much it was a great end to a perfect day. Tomorrow we will be “hanging around” again. More play-off games to watch ---- GO PATS!!!!!!!
