The evening cooled down considerably into the 30’s. Although it had been warm during the day, this is the Northeast and things change quickly. Our furnace worked perfectly and kept us nice and warm through the night.
After getting to bed at 9 pm and immediately falling asleep we woke at 3 am fully rested. Worked out well because we had planned on getting on the road early and through the DC Beltway before rush hour. After a coffee and tea we were off by 3:30 am. It always amazes the both of us when we see the amount of traffic on the road so early in the morning. No major hassles driving in the middle of the night just more company then we expected.
The tolls are nuts – getting more and more expensive. By the time we traversed the NJ Turnpike, then the Delaware Memorial Bridge, another toll on the Delaware Turnpike and the Francis Scott Key Bridge the tolls we paid out were $75.00 in under 100 miles. Expensive little ride.
Once around the beltway our goal was to find a nice rest area to catch a few winks. We stopped at the first rest area in Virginia. It was designated for cars, buses and RV’s only so was very quiet. After a quick muffin we hit the sack again. To our surprise we slept for almost three hours and were up and getting ready to travel again by 9:30 am.
We had another good travel day and stopped for the night at The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads in Roanoke Rapids, NC. It is right off the highway and a really nice quiet place with all the amenities we needed. Jewel was in seventh heaven when she realized the ride was done for the day and she quickly picked her spot to lay on the grass.
The weather looks like it will be good for at least the next ten days so we are hoping to be able to make some stops along the route to Marathon Key. In the past we have always run into lousy weather so just kept heading South. When we arrived in NC it was 65 degrees and felt great.
Not sure where tomorrow will find us but we’re hoping that the warm weather trend continues!!! Can’t always believe the weather reporters.
