It is day 14 and after a leisurely road trip we have finally arrived in Sunny Florida. The cold front that has been following us is set to arrive within the next 36 hours. Of course, that is what usually happens once we arrive in the Sunshine State. LOL
The road into the park was well paved and had cute little signs to protect the wildlife. ![]()
Fort Clinch State Park sits on a peninsula with one area facing the ocean and the other St Mary’s River. We were fortunate to get a site on the ocean side in a circle of only 21 other sites. You could see a sliver of ocean from our site overlooking the dunes. Florida CG’s are beautifully maintained and year after year win national awards for best state CG’s in the US. Interestingly, we see more Canadian campers at each stop trying to get away from those harsh winters.
While setting up we chatted with our neighbors to our left who were traveling in a small class B – more like a conversion van. They have been everywhere in that van including Alaska. We have often thought about downsizing to a class B but after further review decided it would be way to small for us and a dog.
Once settled in and after lunch we took Jewel for her much anticipated walk so she could explore and smell new smells. She was in her glory until she found the dreaded sand spurs that caught on her paws and hair. They are nasty little miniature cacti balls the size of a pea that hurt like hell. I got one caught in my finger when taking it off of Jewel. She was so happy - then not so much. On our short walk with her I picked at least 20 of those spurs off her paws. She resorted to walking on the tar and only sniffing the edge of the grass.
It was so beautiful with a brisk ocean breeze and the temp at 73. We opted to take a walk on the beach and on the fishing pier. Although the sun was warm the wind was quite cool so we needed light jackets to be comfortable.
The walk on the beach was great – something we really enjoy doing.
Once we walked the beach along the fishing pier we retraced our steps and went up on the pier to walk to the end. Along the way we were joined by some wildlife who were also enjoying the beautiful day.
When we were walking along the beach beside the pier we thought we saw people walking in the distance along the rocks and jersey barriers. Once up on the pier we soon realized that what we thought were people in the distance were really big birds. DUH!!!! They are much bigger they appear in the picture. Not sure how long the pier is but probably close to one mile out. It was a great walk between the beach and the pier. We walked for well over an hour and enjoyed it very much.
Back at our site we sat outside and enjoyed our afternoon cup of coffee and taking in the last of the sun in for the day. The cold weather front was moving in and we could feel the difference in the temperature rather quickly.
It was a great afternoon, but by 5:30 pm it was time to get inside. The wind was whipping and the temp had dropped 20 degrees. Tomorrow is projected to not get above 62 degrees. We’ll take it!!!! Of course, since we are at Fort Clinch State Park we will be touring another fort. Forts and caves seem to be a common theme for us.
